Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Civic responsibility refers to the duties and obligations of citizens to participate in the social, political, and economic processes of their community. In Nigeria, youth engagement in civic activities has been a topic of concern, as many young people are disengaged from important societal issues such as voting, community service, and public policy participation. Broadcasting, especially through radio and television, plays a pivotal role in encouraging civic responsibility among youths. By broadcasting programs that promote political awareness, social participation, and community involvement, media outlets can inspire youths to take an active role in their society. This study explores the role of broadcasting in encouraging civic responsibility among youths in Illela LGA, Sokoto State, focusing on how radio and television programs can motivate young people to engage in civic activities (Ogunleye & Akinyemi, 2023; Abubakar & Musa, 2024).
